Born of an English soldier and an Egyptian mother, Cora Mallory is a foreigner to the grand balls and arbitrary strictures of London high society. She won’t let that stop her from using her debut season to land the best match she can—ideally a nobleman. But an encounter with otherworldly beings will force her to decide what truly matters most, and the consequences of her choice will resonate far more widely than she could possibly expect.

In an instant, Cora felt wrong.

The dark and still confines of the storeroom were now overlaid with riotous, writhing, living motion. She felt her mind seeing in new colors that had always been present, but never visible to her human eyes. In that new light she saw… things. Mostly tiny, anchored in place on practically every surface, swaying like underwater plants, but with more intention and less substance. Their undulations triggered the same revulsion as the maggot-bloated carcasses of dead rats on the poorer streets of Alexandria. Unlike maggots, these creatures emanated an overwhelming, desperate hunger into Cora’s consciousness. Wherever her hands moved close they arched toward her, needing to feed.

All thoughts left Cora’s mind as waves of nausea doubled her over. She steadied herself on the crate, closing her eyes and fighting her breakfast’s attempt to make a reappearance. Behind the darkness of her eyelids she still felt new sensations, a rumbling hum that seemed to come from inside her own head, and was growing louder.

Opening her eyes, Cora saw more motion from larger specimens of the unsettling creatures. Some were anchored to the items in crates, while a few flitted in and out of the shadows. Still the humming grew louder, and her mind swam as though she’d had far too much wine.

Overwhelmed, Cora collapsed unconscious to the floor.
